The ROG project aims to develop new software and hardware components useful for offering a new three-dimensional (3D) printable digital modelling service, focussed on the human heart and its pathologies, as a support tool for the simulation of surgical interventions, medical-scientific training and doctor-patient communication in a field, that of cardiovascular diseases, among the most important for public health.
ROG project enabled us to use three main technologies: Mock-up, VR and 3D printing.
This allows to provide surgeons and doctors with a complete training on the human heart. Currently, we are validating 3D models on bones, muscles and neurological tissues due to the request of the Center for Computational Medicine in Cardiology (CCMC) at USI (Università Svizzera Italiana).
ROG addresses to one of the main problems in the health sector: early and inaccurate diagnosis of dangerous heart diseases. The system allows different interactions among 3D modelling, Virtual Reality and automatic medical detection, thanks to AI algorithms based on machine learning techniques.
Thanks to our intuitive GUI – Graphical User Interface, the system allows to recognise anomalies by tagging the mutations and the morphologic aberrations, thus supporting and collecting extensive libraries of 2D images and 3D models. This enables an unprecedented new way to train student and surgeon for any kind of diagnosis or potentially critical surgery operation.

The interaction between 3D modelling, Virtual Reality and automatic medical detection will impact on patience treatment with hearth diseases rapid and outlined mapping, and under economic profile with significant cost reductions.
FOCUS ON: SOFTWARE
A sophisticated software able to manage multiple actions:
- AI system for pathologies identification and tagging
- Machine Learning system to improve semiautomatic tagging of pathologies and heart sections interesting for the heart surgeon
- Blockchain system for the security of data and information both incoming and outgoing.
Cloud hosting system will be designed for storage, sorting, mining, searching of 3D images and very high-resolution heart sections.
The ROG platform is now registered at the Italian Association for the Collective Management of Authors’ Rights (SIAE, registration number: 28-11-2017/012023) and it is now able to support high-definition mock-ups and adapt models that can be employed in VR or 3D printing, redefining the resin model approach commonly used today. This is possible thanks to our algorithm and in-house-developed mathematical modelling tools, whose patent is going to be filed in the future.
